View Full Version : Background program woes

Upon hitting ctl+alt+del, I see that there are a ton of "processes" running
on my new Dell. On my previous machines, I would make sure that only
"systray" and "Explorer" were running behind the scenes, nothing else. It
bugs the crap out of me that all these "processes" are running needlessly (I
assume) and taking up system resources. Folks, what is normal for XP as far
as background programs go? I'm brand new to XP, but not to computers, so any
help or advice on how to minimize these behind the scenes "processes" would
be greatly appreciated!

I've got 46 processes running at this time with no system slow down!

Hi Morris,
On previous machines, you just didn't see the normal background processes.
Task Manager in Win9x systems was fairly limited in this manner, all you saw
was systray and explorer, but in fact much more was going on.. The truth is
that many of those processes you see are normal. For a better idea of what
is going on, check the startup and services tabs of msconfig.
