The system I normally use is a Win '98 SE OS on it. My
sister's computer is a XP Professional OS on it. I have
tried to get the networking between the two systems going
but it won't read the network. I have placed the files on
Share but it still doesn't do anything. I had the Win '98
SE computer on the windows network login and it didn't
work. I will say I do not like XP for it conflics with to
many things. It has blown two video cards and a
motherboard but my sister still seems to want XP. Do I
have to put XP on the 98 system or do I have to put 98 on
the XP system. And if I have to do the 98 on the XP
system can I just install 98 overtop of the XP? I have
done all I can do from what I watched my fiancee do since
he builds whiteboxes but he never liked putting XP on any
of the systems for the simple fact it conflicts with to
many software. Ok I think I have rambled on enough. I
hope I made some sense and that someone out there can help
me.

There's no need to put XP on the 98 system. All versions of Windows
can network with each other.

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers. It will handle all
of the details of configuring the network. To run the Wizard, follow
the steps shown here:

i did that in the first place and it didn't work at
all....the XP seems to show the 98's name but won't access
it and the 98 sees nothing of the XP system...and yes all
files are with the lil blue hand covering the bottom of
it...

You're welcome.

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

Ok I got both systems to read each other finally....

I figured it out without the websites as the websites did
not help anything because all it did was tell me to do
what I have already done. But I found the problem.

Now the other problem I have is the internet connection is
not working. I can use it on the 98 system where it has
to connect from and the XP is not able to view websites or
load any of the IM's....

How do I fix that problem....
