I upgraded to XP and installed new software for my HP3100
printer/fax/scanner/copier. It works fine, the software is installed, icons
appear where they should etc. but every time I boot the computer I get a
"found new hardware message". If I cancel everything works, but if I ask it
to install it gives an error message. Can I disable the message popup for
this piece of hardware only?

Life is too short to work out why the software is giving the error message.

There are several possible causes for this problem.

If the unit is connected to the parallel port, I suggest checking that your
printer is set to ECP in the BIOS. I have seen this problem with several
HP multifunction units, and changing the printer port setting to ECP
quickly resolved it.

Are you using the correct and up to date printer driver?

If this is a USB connection, there could be other issues. You might want to
repost and note the type of connection..
