View Full Version : Compatibility with Office 2000?

I just got a laptop with Windows XP Home Edition as the
operating system. My desktop came with Office 2000
Professional Edition installed on it and Windows 98 Second
Edition. Will Office 2000 work with Windows XP? If yes,
is there anything to watch out for when installing it onto
the laptop?

Office 200 is fully compatible with Windows XP, just install it.

Office 2000 is supported on Windows XP.
You would be advised to have Service Pack 1 for Windows XP installed and to
also apply Service Pack 3 for Office 2000

Greetings --
While Office 200 will work fine on WinXP, you cannot use the OEM
Office license that you purchased with the desktop on the new laptop.
First of all, an OEM license is only valid for the computer with which
it was purchased, and cannot be transferred to another computer under
any circumstances. Secondly, an OEM license allows only a single
installation on a single computer. This is why what you are
contemplating is better known as software piracy, otherwise known as
theft.
If you had had the foresight to have purchased a retail license
for Office, you could do this, as the retail Office license permits
the installation of the product on one desktop PC and one portable
computer, provided that computers both have the same primary user and
are not in use simultaneously.

Greetings --
Mike, is Microsoft now permitting the transfer of OEM licenses?

Not that I am aware of.
Good catch - I did not notice the implied movement of a possible OEM Office
to another machine.
He will need to check his license - but I would suspect he cannot move the
OEM supplied product.

Greetings --
;-} I rather suspected that, but thought I'd ask, just in case
something had changed, so I could amend any future responses.
