I was in the middle of a connection and I lost the connection due to
idle time out or something similar. Then I saw the modem already in
use 633 message. I used to see this years ago and was bit surprised.
So Rebooted and still got the error.

Finally I deleleted the modem from device manager and rebooted and it
did it's plug and play thing. And it worked !!!.

Then the next day I went to connect again and got the error. Tried
deleting the device again and rebooting. But this time it did not
work.

I've tried everything, uninstalling fax, disabling all net work
devices. Using restore system to previous known good date etc.

Hyper terminal in my case does NOT work. It just says disconnected
every time I try.

If the modem died why did removing the driver work the first time.

If the modem did not die why does hyprterminal not work for me like it
has for most everyone else.

I'm afraid to reinstall. I have lots of complex licenses and it will
be days of grief.

Toshiba has offered me to swap the laptop with a new one.

It's a tecra s1 with win xp pro and sp1. And a ton of software
installed.

I appreciates Ken's help he has provided so far on this sproblem.

If Ken could mail rarepair.exe I'll give
it a try

Thanks

In this case I actually worry about the modem having died. That it worked
once is interesting, but may have just been the modem in it's death throes.
In other 633 cases the customer has still been able to communicate with the
modem via Hyperterminal.

If Toshiba is offering to replace the hardware for free I would probably
take them up on it. If not I would try and test the modem so more. Such as
booting a DOS boot disk and send the modem commands directly to the serial
port.

If the modem still seems functional or you would still like to try rarepair,
send mail to and I'll send you a copy.
