View Full Version : Can I upgrade license from XP Home to XP Pro?

I upgraded my son's pc from 98 to XP Home. What a mess! I SHOULD have just
sprung for XP Pro from the start. So today I went out and bought XP Pro
Upgrade, but of course can't get my money back on XP Home. Is there any way
to get an additional upgrade license for XP Pro or a discount since XP Home
is coming off and NEVER NEVER NEVER going on another PC? I'd like to upgrade
my other home PC from NT 4 if I can get a good deal (much less than the $99
for Home plus the $199 fro Pro).
Thanks,
Steve

What are your problems with XP Home?
The code base is absolutely identical to that of XP Pro, except for
certain specific functions and features that are found only in XP Pro.
I cannot think of a single circumstance where a computer that was having
problems with XP Home would not have exactly the same problems with XP
Pro.
Good luck

Well, FIRST of all It IS NOT the same as XP or 2k or NT interms of user
management. It IS the same as 98 or less. Only Full powered users or No
Powered users, and absolutely nothing in the way of management of users,
profiles, etc that the real M$ systems have. I really feel like this is a
bait and switch tactic on the part of the Gates Klan.

What Ron told you is true. Your response to his post is nonsense.

Sophisticated user management is one of the features that is only found in
XP Pro, that is true. My experience would be that for at least 99 and
44/100% of the people who are using XP Home in their homes that the
available options are sufficient.
You can do more extensive setting of file and folder permissions in Home,
but it is a bit cumbersome and I am not 100% certain of all of the details
as I have never done it myself. I believe that it has to be done from
Safe Mode as Administrator.
Going back to your XP Home that you first purchased. If that is a Retail
Upgrade version then you can legitimately sell it to someone else and they
can register and activate it, although a telephone activation may be
necessary. You should give any new purchaser a letter confirming that
the Home version has been completely removed from your computer.
Good luck
