OK, I got a WinXP Pro and a Win98SE computer in the same
room and I was wondering if I could use some CAT-5 cable
to network the two together and then use Internet
Connection Sharing from the XP Pro (which is wirelessly
connected to an Access Point) to also give the 98SE
computer simultaneous access to the internet (ie both be
on at the same time)?? I have a rough idea of how to do
it, but I don't want to get halfway through it and then
realize I'm going about it all wrong.

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris,

Yes, you can do that. Here is an artitcle that will help walk you through
setting it up.

If you want to make your WinXP an Internet entry point for your Win98SE
machine with a direct connection, you will have to turn the WinXP into a
gateway somehow. This is cumbersome (I have done it by having two network
cards on the gateway machine and connecting the 2nd to a hub), so you want
to avoid it. I will assume your Access Point is a wireless router. But is it
also a switch? These usually have 4 RJ45 connections plus the 1 to connect
to your Cable/DSL modem or whatever is taking you to the Internet. If your
Access Point is purely wireless, then you are left with the choice of
upgrading your Access Point to a wireless router/switch combination, or
exchanging your Win98SE network card for a wireless one.

If it helps, this is the current topology I have set up at home:
(Option 1)
Outside World --> DSL Modem --> (RJ45) Linksys WRT54G --> (RJ45) Desktop PC
[XP]
|
|
+----> (Wireless-G) Laptop PC
[Win98]
{w/ Linksys WPC54G PCMCIA
card}

This is what I used to do before I went wireless:
(Option 2, a.k.a, the "hard way")
Outside World --> DSL Modem --> (RJ45) Desktop PC [network card 1]
[network card 2]
|
|
+---------------HUB
|
|
(RJ45) Laptop PC

*And* to let the Laptop PC get out to the Internet, you need some flavor of
gateway software on your main PC; *and* your main PC is rather exposed. With
Option 1, the router provides some additional protection.
