A simple question... I have been advised the safest way to
protect my PC with cable broadband from unathorised log
ons, hackers and whater else nasty lies in the internet is
with a hardware firewall. Is this true? If it is, what
do I look for to have a top notch, infallabale hardware
firewall?

Consider purchasing and installing a comprehensive
internet security package, such as:

Norton Internet Security 2003
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/

-- Includes Norton AntiVirus 2003
-- Includes Norton Personal Firewall
-- Automatically updates itself
-- Includes prevention of annoying web pop-ups
-- Includes Parental Controls
-- All in one, easy-to-install & manage package

This is what I use:
1) Software: Free version of ZoneAlarm (see zonelabs.com)
2) Hardware: DSL/Cable router--Netgear's has a couple of extra protection
features; I use the WGR614 (wireless + 4 RJ45 ports) model.

Between the router and ZoneAlarm you should be pretty safe, unless the FBI
comes after you...

Linksys or Dlink or Netgear. Get one that is UPnP compatible. If you can
scan an online manual, some of these routers have pretty incredible
configurability.

But they all work well.
