Half Rubbish
January 9th 04, 09:27 PM
Hi

I'm having problems both machines are XP pro SP1 and are
laptops.

One has a Lucent Orinoco Gold Wireless adapator, the
other a Netgear MA401
wireless adaptor, both PCMCIA cards. Now if i setup them
both in peer to
peer (ad hoc) mode they can see each other and talk, and
everything works
fine, but as soon as I place a LAN cable in either one of
them they lose the
other one. This can be demonstrated well by setting up a
recuring ping
(ping -a xx.xx.xx.xx) and watching it suddenly turn into
request timed out
when the cable is plugged in and returning to normal when
it is removed.
This happens on both machine and I have no idea why ! any
help would be
greately appreciated. Im quite experienced with XP but
this problem is
beyond me :( ! Thanks

How the wired netcard is configured? DHCP?

No, static IP that I entered myself on both computers.
all within 192.168.0.xx range.

Any ideas ?

What is the purpose of the second card? Why is it a
wired card and not a wireless? It still sounds like a
protocol problem. Is NetBeui enabled over TCP/IP?

Ok this looks like old known issue with IP interface metrics.
The metric for wired interface is less (better) based on link speed.
Then you need to fix this in your route table.

Basically, i have one laptop that stays in the kitchen
downstairs and another i take round the
house/office/garage with me. i need to be able to see the
kitchen laptop at all times from the other laptop. but
when i plug in the laptop to the wired network in my
office to print/move files then it loses the kitchen
machine. I cant find Netbeui in the card settings, but
I'v added NWLink Netbios and the related IPX/SPX one now,
on both machines. However the problem remains even after
adding these 2 protocols. How do I add Netbeui under XP
pro ??

I've also got a couple of reasons why i dont want to buy
an Access Point, firstly setting it up being difficult to
configure to be secure, secondly i dont really have the
money, 3rdly i dont have sufficient room on my switch on
my wired LAN for another port :(

Ok I've done that but it seems now it will only work with
the wireless interface. Is there anyway to make them both
work at the same time ?

Connect the cable. Type in cmd window: ROUTE PRINT
Are the metrics of the wired and wireless interfaces different?
If yes: read the docum on the route command.

Yes if they are connected to different subnets.
If they are connected to same subnet, the solution is not easy.
For example, Intel's approach for Centrino notebooks was to make a pseudo netcard
driver that sits above wireless and wired netcard, and switches the traffic transparently for
Windows.

Is there anyway then of getting them both to work
simultaenously ?

They are both on the same subnet 255.255.255.0 and
192.168.0.xx IP range.
Would it work with different ranges for wireless ? but
then would i be able to get on the wired Lan still
through the one machine at the same time ?

OK I've had a bit of a play. I did the same thing but
substituted the Wireless card for a Firewire LAN
connection, all the same settings, and it works
flawlessly. I just create a network bridge and the
machines cann all see each other on the same subnet/IP
range. Why does the wireless adaptor cause this and the
1394 one doesnt ? I've tried using a network bridge with
the WLAN adaptor but to no joy. Any ideas ?

That should be NetBIOS over TCP/IP, not NetBEUI, Thom. We've probably
all mixed up those two similar names at some time. But it isn't
relevant, because pinging doesn't use NetBIOS. File and Printer
Sharing does.

Pavel A. has the right answer: to use two network adapters
simultaneously, they must be in different subnets. Since both
adapters have IP addresses in the same subnet
(192.168.0.x/255.255.255.0), TCP/IP will use one or the other, but not
both. If the metric values are different for the two adapters, it
uses the one with the lower metric. If the metrics are the same,
there's no way of knowing which one it will use. Windows XP
automatically assigns a lower metric to the network adapter with the
higher rated speed. That's why the wired adapter overrides the
wireless one.
