Compcore softpeg doesn't work in Windows xp

I used to see vcd's using SoftPeg2.1 in wn98se, but this software installed
on Windows xp doesn't work. The SoftPeg screen comes up but the play and
other buttons do not work.

Is there a workaround?

It looks like version 2.2 works with Windows XP:
