After sending a friend an interesting image off a website, a fragment of
that image has embedded onto my desktop background.
I am at a loss as to how to rid myself of it, and how to prevent it from
happening again.

Right click on the background, click on Properties, change the background
image to the appropriate image.
You can use the Search for Files and Folders to find the specific image on
your hard disk drive (usually the C: drive). Search for the name of the
file. When it's found, you can highlight it and delete it.
