View Full Version : Windows Update - how to have it download automatically

Hi,
I've got Win2kProSP3 and WinXP-ProSP1 machines. In Win2k, I've got an icon
in a tray for Windows Update and periodically a balloon emanating from it
annoucing that a new update(s) has been downloaded and is available for
inspection/installation. That's a pretty neat feature from Microsoft ...
if somewhat overdue :-)
However, I can't figure out how to get Windows Update configured in the
same way on the XP machine.
Any guidance would be most appreciated.
TIA,
Richard

You can configure the Automatic Update feature in the Control Panel >

Hi Thorsten,
Thanks for your advice. I had forgotten about System applet for that
purpose. It turns out that I had already elected the option to "Keep my
computer up to date ..." and selected the setting the radio button for
"Download the updates automatically ..."
I didn't see anything about having an icon in the System Tray.
I check to see what I had done on the Win2k system. As you probably know,
there's no "Automatic Updates" tab in the System applet.
An further ideas you may have would be appreciated.
Regards,
Richard

The icon may be hidden, you should check the Notification
customizations. Also it may be that your PC simply was not idle for a
longer time when you were online, so that the AU did not start up to
nw.

Hi Thorsten,
Thanks for your reply. I hunted for info on "Notification customizations"
in Windows Help and Windows-Update Help to no avail. Can you give me a
suggestion as to where I can get more information.
Regards,
Richard

If you type
Notification customizations
in help the first and third topic is relevent
From help
To customize notifications
1.. Right-click the taskbar, and then click Properties.
2.. On the Taskbar tab, under Notification area, select the Hide inactive icons check box.
3.. Click Customize.
4.. In the Name column, click the notification you want to change, in the Behavior column, click the behavior you want in the list, and then click OK.
5.. On the Taskbar tab, click Apply.
For Automatic Updates (also from help 2nd topic)
To turn on automatic updates
1.. Open System in Control Panel.
2.. On the Automatic Updates tab, click either of the first two settings.
Notes
a.. To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
b.. To turn off automatic updates for your computer, select Turn off automatic updating; I want to update my computer manually.
c.. If you choose not to use automatic updating, you can always install specific updates from the Windows Update Web site. Open Windows Update in Help and Support Center.

Hi David,
Thank you very much. I got the icon displayed now when the
left-angle-bracket to expose the hidden items.
I misinterpeted the "Hide inactive items" checkbox and its corresponding
dialog. IMHO, Microsoft could have done a better job of engineering the
human interface.
Best wishes,
Richard
