ok...what do i have to do differently when i use a 8 port
ethernet switch instead of just a regular hub when
creating a small network of 4 computers? Can anyone just
briefly walk me through the networking process? I have
four computers, 3 desktops with XP and one desktop with
windows 2000. I want all computers to have access to the
internet, through one computer which is done with a dsl
connection. Do i have to make any specific modifications
with the ip addresses, etc? I also want all the computers
to be able to share files and applications through one
computer...PLEASE HELP!!!

There should be no difference in the setup for a hub vs. a switch.
Both devices do basically the same thing. A switch has some built-in
intelligence that lets it send information over the network more
efficiently and with higher total bandwidth.
Make sure that you're not inadvertently connecting one of the
computers to the switch's uplink port.
Configure the computer with the DSL connection as an Internet
Connection Sharing host. Configure the other computers as Internet
Connection Sharing clients. I've written a web page with full
details:
