Hello Malcolm,
I am having a similar problem like the one you described.
I called the router (Linksys) manufacture about the
firewall issue. They claim that most routers come with a
firewall installed already on the router and because of
this you disable one of the firewall. WinXP is usually
their suggestion. You can't share the LAN with both
firewall engage, it blocks your XP computer from the rest
of the computers on the network. Hope this answer your
question. Maybe, you can help me. I am having problems
trying to get my XP to recognize my other computer that
are running win98. How did you setup you system?
