View Full Version : Using WinXP firewall with LAN ?

Hello Malcolm,

I am having a similar problem like the one you described.
I called the router (Linksys) manufacture about the
firewall issue. They claim that most routers come with a
firewall installed already on the router and because of
this you disable one of the firewall. WinXP is usually
their suggestion. You can't share the LAN with both
firewall engage, it blocks your XP computer from the rest
of the computers on the network. Hope this answer your
question. Maybe, you can help me. I am having problems
trying to get my XP to recognize my other computer that
are running win98. How did you setup you system?

you can have both firewalls on, just open port 135 on the XP firewall for
file sharing and that should do the job.
but it's perhaps redundant to have 2 fw's that both only protect you against
incoming data.
try running zonealarm instead of xp's fw for full protection.

Hi Everett
I didn't have any problem with the WinXP machine recognising the Win98
machines. I used the netwoek configuration wizard on the WinXP. Ensure
that the Win98 machines have Client for MS networks, Ethernet adapter and
TCP/IP binding for Ethernet adapter correctly installed in Network Control
Panel.
