View Full Version : reinstall

Have had several minor and a few major problems with winxp home, sp1
which has been on a new computer since November. Can windows be
reinstalled over the top without losing anything? And, if so, would it
correct any corrupt files or add back any missing?
If the answer is no, what about installed xp pro over the top?
Reason for one of these methods is that it took a few weeks to get the
various programs installed and properly set up, and installing over the
top would not require any changes and may (or may not) fix the problems.
Problems include:
1) Easy CD Creator 6 will not install without crashing windows. Take all
out of startup and services except microsoft, and it boots, but then add
a few back in and it won't boot, take them out and it still does not
boot, then perhaps the 4th time it will boot, then the next time will
not (except in safe mode). Then next time will boot, so add two
different programs to startup (like the mouse) and it crashes. Take
them out in safe mode and reboot and it crashes again. Played with it
for three days and their techs nor myself could not find any reason for
erratic behavior.
2) System restore will not restore -- tried several different dates (and
it's not turned off).
3) Several drop down windows inoperative such as Search does not
automatically include sub-folders and need to manually turn on advanced
options. Taskbar: Properties, hide inactive icons, customize.
Behavior column shows "hide when inactive." Can click on that and see
drop down box, but it doesn't drop down, so don't have the other
options.
Any words of wisdom would certainly be appreciated!

Do a repair. Follow these instructions from Mark Ferguson. You may have to go
into your BIOS to set the CD drive as the first boot device. Set it back to
your HD after the repair install is complete. You shouldn't loose any data.
Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,
When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware
and then prompts you to select one of the following options:
To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press ENTER.
Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system
prompts you to select one of the following options:
To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.
Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,
you may need re-download all updates.

Thanks, Steve. Since it's friday and the computer is needed for
business Monday and Tuesday, will wait until Wednesday for a complete
backup, then going through your procedure. Will let you know how it
works out.
