Does anyone know what the key "NV Hostname" stand for in
windows XP and 2003 registry.
The key is located under
HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/tcpip/parameters
Thanks,

not sure about NV, but it is just the hostname the computer identifies
itself as on a network.

Hi,
NV Hostname is Next Value Hostname - this is the value your hostname will
be the next time the registry is read (reboot). If you change your hostname
and don't reboot the new hostname is stored here.

ahh, ok. that clears that up. i figured it was somewhere along those
lines (yeah right ;-), lol).
so, when will MS take the road Linux did (ie, you don't have to reboot).
i don't mean to start a MS vs. Linux thread, but seriously, the restarts
are a pain. i haven't restarted my linux server is months, and within
that, i re-configured a large part of the network (added 2 more
interfaces, and configured it as a 3 interface router).
but my Windows system, even if i log out (theoretically the most stable
mode), it only lasts maybe 3 days before the system hangs way down to a
crawl (assuming bad fragmentation in RAM and the swap file).
but, in MS's defence, even when logged out, my windows system is still
in a graphical environment, while my server sits in a console
environment.
but anyway, it is late, and i am mostly rambling.
