I am networking 2 computers together. And on my computer
with Windows 98 i am trying to send a file to my other
computer which has WIndows XP. When i try to open the
XP's files it asks for a password. I was wondering what
this password might be since I haven't assigned it a
password.
Thank you for your help.

Is it asking for the IPC$ password? If so, run the Network Setup
Wizard on XP to fully enable file sharing. That's usually all it
takes.

If you have XP Professional and have disabled simple file sharing,
create a user account on XP Professional with the same user name and
password that you use to log onto Windows 98.

If you've defined a password for the Guest account, enter that
password.

Yes, this works. But why can't I logon to Win98 with a username and password
of an account previously created in WinXP. I then get the IPC$ error.

You need to create a compatable share. Windows XP create shares like this by
default D$. Windows 98 and ME don't recognize this to authenticate. Right
click on an item you want to share and goto Sharing and Security, now click
on New Share, and create a new item like D, don't forget to set the
permissions, IE Authenticated Only, this should cure your problem.
