When I shut down, I get a message "End program -
explorer.exe - ending program after which a "gauge" (as
if you were downloading something) comes up, extends and
then finally the computer shuts down. Sometimes another
message "End progam connections tray" does the same thing
right after. I've emailed HP who have given me various
scenarios and things to try (all to no avail) I'm loading
the XP service patch(es) now but don't know if that will
help either. HELP

It sounds like you have a program running in the background that is taking
too much time to shut down. When you shut down XP, it will attempt to close
any programs that are still running.

Prtess CTRL+ALT+DEL once to bring up the Task Manager and see what
applications or processes are running. Go to Start/Run and type
eventvwr.msc to open the Event Viewer and check in the Applications and
System folders for any errors that have a time stamp which corresponds to
the last time you encoutered this behavior.
