View Full Version : File and Printer Sharing Problem

Hello,

I bought a Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 router so that I could use
the file and printer sharing that windows platforms offer.

The 2 problems I have are that I can't copy files from
another computer into my computer and the other computer
can't print files on a printer that's connected to my
computer. The other computer is also incapable of copying
files onto my computer even though write access is enabled.
The errors I get:

When copying from another computer to this one:
First of all, it takes FOREVER for the folder to list all
the files.
Once it lists the files, I try dragging a file to one of my
folders and I get the hourglass for a long time.

Finally, I get the following message:

\\Piddy\temp is not accessible. You might not have
permissions to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.
The specified network name is no longer available.

However, I can still click back on the other computer's
folder and it still displays all the files.

When printing:
The other computer sends a file to print
the printer queue shows the task and it says "spooling"
then the task just disappears and nothing happens to the
printer

When the other computer tries to put a file into one of my
folders:
The computer can reach the shared folder and see a listing
of files.
When the file is dragged into one of my shared files,
nothing happens for a while
Then:

Cannot copy tempfile.doc: The specified network name is no
longer available

Once again, if I try to list all the files in the
"specified network name" I get a listing of them.

After each of these operations I do a ping command and I
get successful replies with no loss of data.

I have a desktop computer with Windows XP Professional with
an Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 1.62 GHz as well as
512MB of RAM.
I also have a SMC EZ Card 10/100 PCI (SMC 1211 series) that
I use to connect to the router.

The other computer is a hp pavillion ze1230 laptop with
Windows XP Home Edition with AMD mobile Athlon XP 1500+
running at 1.30 GHz and 240 MB of RAM. This computer has a
VIA Compatible Fast Ethernet Adapter used for the router.

I have set up the network as the guide indicated, and both
computers can connect to the internet. My computer is
connected to the printer and I have enabled sharing for the
printer.
I also enabled sharing for several folders, each of which
have writing and reading enabled.
I have used the ping command from the prompt to see if the
computers connect to each other, they do.
The other computer can copy files from my shared folders.
I disabled Norton Anti-virus
I do not have a firewall enabled.

One last thing to mention is that there are rare times when
a print job goes through or I am capable of copying files
from the other computer to mine. This seems to happen at
random since all I do is keep trying until it sometimes
goes through (Sometimes nothing I do seems to change this
problem).
Also, the computers are right next to each other, and they
are both connected to the router which is in between them.

I am hoping to fix this soon because I need to be able to
share files between these computers for my professional
projects.

Thank you for your help.
