The HDD from my Win 95 system had a Drivespace compressed
drive. I installed (or had the store install) that drive
as a d: on my new XP system, expecting to be able to copy
files from it to the new c:. Now, I've learned easier
said than done. Anyone know of a utility that can "see"
the Drivespace files so I can copy them elsewhere?

You may have success restoring Win 95/98/ME backups (.qic)
with Stomp BackupMYPC (formerly Veritas Backup Exec)

There's a 30 day trial available. Try it!

A Windows 95 startup disk has DriveSpace on it. The MS-DOS on the
startup disk can access the DriveSpace drive but cannot access the
C: drive if it has NTFS. If you have enough space on the compressed
drive, you can decompress it. You may have to decompress in stages
and move the decompressed files if you do not have enough space on
the compressed drive to decompress all the files at once. You would
then boot into Windows XP to move the files and repeat the process
until all the files are recovered.

You can download a Windows 95 boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com
if you cannot create one locally.

That will NOT help him see a drive that is compressed with "drive space".
Guess you weren't around when drive space was. The drive must be mounted,
and then decompressed, using Windows 98.

Thanks, Earl. I downloaded the file. What do I do with
it - copy to a floppy and boot it?

Execute the file and it will tell you what to do.

Yes, boot off the 95 system and run drivespace to uncompress the drive
then XP can see the files.
