I just bought a new notebook with XP installed and I need to move my files
and programs from my old notebook which is running Win2000Pro.

My question to experienced users is just this: Does the files and settings
transfer wizard work reliably, or is it better to just copy the files,
reinstall the programs and set everything up over again?

Hi,

FASTWIZ is a very nice utility, and works quite well. Read up here:

In either event you are still going to have to reinstall your programs. You
should run the wizard on your current computer so you can get a feel for
what it does. You have lot's of options as to which files and settings you
want to transfer. You can make it as simple or as in depth as you wish. You
certainly have nothing to lose by running it and potentially a lot to gain.

The advantage of fastwiz.exe is that it saves your program settings, so
you don't lose your Word toolbar settings, for example, or your Outlook
Express Blocked Senders list.

Note that if you are migrating from a shared 9x to XP, you run the
fastwiz on *each* XP account to import everything from 9x and then
delete whatever you don't want. Having real user accounts on XP is so
much nicer than sharing everything on 9x. You can also configure fastwiz
not to import program settings that you aren't going to reinstall on XP
(Works, for example).

There is nothing to lose by trying it except a little time. Read Gary
Woodruff's article http://aumha.org/a/fast.htm and assess that
