How do you delete an icon from the taskbar?

Right click it and shutdown the associated program.

Varies.
Some programs have an option to display or not display an icon on the
taskbar. If you identify the program associated with the icon you want
removed, someone could help you.
Other programs are configured to display an icon in the Taskbar whenever
they are running. To remove the icon you need to not run the associate
program. You can do so for programs that run at startup by running msconfig
and upchucking the program.
Other icons in the Taskbar are controlled by Windows.
If you right click on the taskbar and select customize, you can choose which
icons you want to hide when inactive.
