I have a Gateway with Windows XL and I tried to hook up
my Canon BJC-5100 printer to it and it says, "/the Driver
is not Digitally signed" What does this mean?? Do I
have to purchase a new printer? It said to stop loading
ASAP as it could damage my computer. It said Windows
would not accept my driver. What does this mean??
Urget, as I have reams of printing to do. Thank you.

Digitally signed drivers (or any other piece of software) means that the
source of driver can be guaranteed. In other words, the driver wasn't
written by some malicious hacker who claims to be Canon (or any other
company). When you install a digitally signed driver you can trust where it
came from (even if you don't trust the source, you at least know where it
came from).
You can install an unsigned driver (press Ok instead of Cancel), but there's
a greater risk. If you really think that the driver came from Canon (from a
CD that came with the hardware for instance or from a well-known website)
then you're probably fine. But it's up to you to decide whether you trust
it or not. The warning simply tells you that it is your responsibility to
decide if you believe where the driver came from or not.
Many hardware manufacturers have chosen not to go back and sign their
existing drivers, so this situation is not uncommon for older hardware.
Just make sure that you got the driver from a source you trust (not some
weird web-site).

What it really means, as you probably have found out by now, is that
your Canon BJC5100 (or BJC5000) will not work under XP at all. Canon
blames MS for changing the print engine from Win98. I didn't realize
when I bought this printer that it was related to a WinModem, another
useless piece of trash. And Canon is too worthless, shiftless and
lazy to rewrite.
