Kevin

Go to start/Run and type services.msc and press OK. Scroll down to
Messenger entry and double click it. In Start Up Type, click the drop down
menu and select Disabled, Apply/OK.

You can also stop the spam without disabling Messenger. In Messenger select
Tools | Options and open the Privacy tab. In MSN Messenger 5 there a check
box "Only people on My Allow List can see my status and send me messages"
that you can check (turn on). In Windows Messenger 4.7 you can select the
"All other users" in My Allow List and move it to My Block List. In both
cases the popus should stop and you can still IM with your friends.

HINT: MSN/windows messenger has nothing to do with the
messenger service - you of all people should know that.

To the OP, get a firewall - the free zonealarm will do
nicely.

Yes, there is also another source of spam that comes in through Windows XP
Messenger Service (not Windows or MSN Messenger). If you're having problems
with that
http://microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
should help you configure the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall to
block this type of spam. Spam that comes through the Windows XP Messenger
Service will be displayed as a message box in the middle of your screen (the
link has a picture). Spam that comes through Windows or MSN Messenger will
be displayed as popups near your taskbar in same way that legitimate instant
messages appear and the instructions below should block that.
