View Full Version : Node Type Unknown

I have a couple of XP Pro Machines that show Node Type
unknown when displaying ipconfig /all.

These machines cannot communicat with the rest of the
network.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 310570 says,
SYMPTOMS
When you use the Ipconfig.exe utility with the /all
switch that shows the TCP/IP configurations on your
computer, the node type may appear as "unknown."
CAUSE
This issue can occur if the EnableProxy key in the
registry is set to an invalid value.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may
cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall
your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that
you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor (Regedit.exe)
to locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Netbt
\Parameters\

Change the value of the EnableProxy value in the
preceding registry key to 0 or 1, quit Registry Editor,
and then restart your computer.

MY PROBLEM IS that the EnableProxy value does not exist
in this location, I've tried adding it manually but is
still says unknown! Any Idea's?

I don't think that the node type showing as "Unknown" is causing the
network problems, TCC. I've seen it on many XP computers, and they
all network just fine. To the best of my knowledge, the EnableProxy
registry key has no effect in a network, such as a peer-to-peer
network, where there isn't a WINS server. Even with WINS, I don't
think that it would cause network problems.

It's well known that a node type of "Peer-to-Peer" causes problems.
Here's the solution for that. Try it and see if it helps:

In the same "Parameters" registry key, delete these values if they're
present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Then, reboot, then try network access again.

For details, see the section on "NodeType" in this Microsoft Knowledge
Base article:
