I am an average pc user. I recently purchased an HP
laptop with Windows XP. I am new to the XP format. My
last desktop pc had Windows 98 and had an Excel program
with it. For me to email work related items to my
employer I need the Excel program. My question being,
what do I need to do to get my pc setup with Excel without
shelling out a couple hundred bucks?

Since Windows XP does not include the Microsoft Excel program,=20
you'll need to purchase and install it.

Check with your employer. Some will purchase proper licensing for employees
to "take home" a copy of the software they use a work. Don't just install
software from work without their express permission since you may violate
license restrictions otherwise.
