if i upgrade to windows xp, will i lose all the files that
were originally put on this computer, some examples are
microsoft word 97, microsoft works, quicken, and if i
added a cable line, for cable internet when i have 98 will
it still be there when i get xp?

An upgrade replaces the system files; all your data and programs should
remain, although you will need to update some drivers and possibly reinstall
some programs.
