I just got cable internet access, but my machine (emachine
t1440) will not connect to the modem (Motorola sb5100).
The installer said that the machine had a winsock error
and that the best way to fix it was to reformat and reload
the OS. The message he actually saw was: McAfee winsock
filter detected that your windows socket protocols were
changed or upgraded. You may need to reboot to access
your network or isp.

Initially he tried the built-in Realtek NIC. Device
manager showed that it was installed and working properly,
but under network connections it said: a network cable was
unplugged. He also tried USB, but XP said that an unknow
USB device had malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognize
it. And this was after installing the USB drivers
supplied by Motorola.

After the tech left, I was unable to use my dial up
connection. So I used system restore to go back to the
state prior to his arrival. I then checked the ethernet
cable and it was secure. Swapped it for a new cable
(Belkin CAT6 networking patch cable). Same thing.
Thought that internal NIC might be bad since it had never
been used before. Disabled it in the computer setup and
added a D-Link dfe-530TX+. Got a conflict error, so I
moved the card to the other open pci slot. XP recognized
it as a Realtek NIC (which the installation guide said it
would). Still said: a network cable is unplugged, while
device manager showed all was well. No active lights on
the NIC. All lights except pc/activity lit up on the
modem. Downloaded and installed the latest driver.
Rebooted and network connections still said a cable is
unplugged. Lights still the same.

I next tried to uninstall all the network adapters
listed. Clicked show all and saw this:

Direct parallel
D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter #2
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC- McAfee
Firewall Network Filter Miniport
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC- Packet
Scheduler Miniport
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #2-McAfee
Firewall Network Filter Miniport
Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #2- Packet
Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP)-McAfee Firewall Network Filter Miniport
WAN Miniport (IP)- Packet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

When I tried to delete them I got this message:
Could not be removed because the machine might need them
to boot up.

So, I removed McAfee firewall, rebooted and tried to
remove them again. Didn't work, even in safe mode.
I searched the net and found instructions for editing the
registry to change the characteristics of the keys to
allow the network entries to be removed. Once done, I was
able to remove the network adapters. Rebooted the machine
and XP loaded the D-Link NIC. But it still said: A network
cable is unplugged. Tried to log on via my dial-up
connection for more ideas and it failed saying: the handle
is invalid. Used system restore to return to the point
before removal of the firewall.

Found information advising the use of WinsockXPFix after
removal of McAfee Firewall. Tried it but still have the
same problem. Called the service provider and they said
that they have a good signal from my modem.

Finally, I popped a new NIC in my kids Win98 machine. It
installed fine. Device manager says it working, but there
are no active lights on it, and the modem's pc/activity
light is still dark.

So, here's what I know:
Cable modem will not connect via internal NIC or USB. I
disabled the internal NIC and installed an add in card.
I've used the supplied network cable and a brand new one.
Modem appears to be communicating with service provider.
Network connections says that a network cable is
unplugged. Device manager says that NIC is properly
installed, and I have the latest drivers for it. McAfee
firewall software has been removed. Under Network
Properties for the D-Link the following shows up:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing
QoS Packet Scheduler
TCP/IP Protocol

TCP/IP is set for automatic assignment of IP address and
DNS address
What do I do now? Please help!
