Hi - hope someone can help with this.

I'm running XP Home edition and up untill recently the computer would boot
directly to the desktop during startup. However, last night I attempted to
install the Windows Media Player version 9 update (which for some reason
never completed) and now when I turn on the computer a screen comes up
showing my user name on the left and a picture of chess pieces on the right.
I have to click on my username to get to the desktop. I'm the only user of
this system and would like to boot directly to the desktop as before. Does
anyone know how I can do this? Also, if anyone knows why the Media Player
update hung I would appreciate that as well.

Thanks for any help. I'm obviously new to all of this.

Control panel user accounts--change the way users log on.

Thanks for the reply.

I looked in User Accounts and there were two accounts listed. One was mine
(no password) and the second was listed as "asp.net" and described as a
"limited account, password protected". Does anyone know what this is? My
understanding is that with no password the system should boot to the
desktop. But now I suspect that this second account is the reason that is
not happening, since XP needs to be told which account to logon to. I'm
tempted to delete it but am reluctant to without knowing what it is. Any
suggestions? Also, I did not see an administrator account (although my
account does have administrator privileges). Shouldn't there be one?

Thanks again for the help.

If you installed the .NET update from the Windows Update site then this is
why your system no longer boots directly to the desktop.
Go Start|Run type in "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and hit
Enter. Highlight your User name in the list and uncheck the box which states
"Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Now your
computer should boot straight into Windows as it did before this update :-)

Looks like that asp.net account was created by XP when you installed an
update. Some services of that update must run under that account. How did
it set the password? Didn't you have to manually input anything?

It didn't set a password. The system just started requiring me to select my
username (no password) to logon.

But this now all makes sense. I did (inadvertently) install the .net
framework during an xp update which apparently created this asp.net account
which changed the logon process. I don't really need this framework though,
since I don't (currently) use any software that uses it. Does anyone know
if there is a way to uninstall this? Perhaps it's not a big issue just to
leave it as long as I can get back to the setup I had before.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone and clearing up this mystery!
