not have the CD's for the MS Office that is on the
computer.. but I need the programs? is there a way to keep
them (I have the HD in 2 main partitions)with out having
to buy office?? (I am a poor college student)
Thanks!

Windows 2000 and Windows XP are operating systems.
Office 2000 and Office XP are applications.
If you have Office 2000 without the CDs, you will not be able to reinstall
or update without the CDs. If the person you got the computer from is still
using the Office CDs, then you do not have a legal copy of Office. I would
ask the person who gave you the compute for the CDs.
If you want the Office applications, I would check with your college
bookstore for best pricing for a college student.
Check How to Buy here:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/
for what is included in the various editions of Office XP. Your needs for
the various office application will determine which edition you need.
If you just need Word, the least costly option is likely Works Suite.

You should be able to buy Office pretty inexpensively at your campus book
store with your student ID.

You can still upgrade your existing Win2000 OS to WinXP using the full
version, just as you can do a clean install with an upgrade CD.
The only difference between the full and upgrade versions (apart from price)
is that the upgrade version requires proof of a qualifying OS before it will
work. Finding that OS already on the disk is one way. If the installation
procedure cannot find the previous OS on your hard disk it will ask you to
insert the CD.
If you do a clean install (i.e. do not upgrade over your existing Win2000
partition) then you will also have to reinstall all your applications. If
you don't have the installation CDs then you are stuffed.

I think you will need XP Pro to do an upgrade to Win2000.
