I have found ME to be unstable and i'm told xp will be
much better. Question is, will all my old programs still
work? Office 97? Dreamweaver 3? Photoshop 4?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you decide to go with Windows XP, do yourself a huge favour and do a
clean install. Download and run the MS Upgrade Advisor to see if your
hardware and software are compatable with WinXP.

I tested the upgrade and nothing worked.
Then ran clean install and it all worked.
The upgrade leaves a ghastly mess of useless backups.
