With a fresh install of windows xp, simple file sharing is enabled by
default. To enable file sharing a user must right click on a folder
and select sharing and security. The following screen is displayed:

Clicking on the "If you understand the scurity risks..." link brings
up the next window:

My question is, what happens when you select the "Just enable file
sharing" button and click ok? What is the change in XP, a service, a
registry switch, or something else?

What if simple file sharing is turned off before this option is
checked, and you share a file?

XP wants you to run the Network Setup Wizard so that it can determine
whether to automatically enable the Internet Connection Firewall. It
enables the firewall if you have a direct connection to the Internet:
dial-up, cable/DSL modem connected to a network card or USB port. It
doesn't enable the firewall if you have an indirect connection:
through an ICS host or broadband router (which it calls a "residential
gateway").

The behavior is the same regardless of the simple file sharing
setting.
