why is it that my XP edition doesn't seem to have excel
on it????? What is this works garbage?
Parts of excel exist in word, but I can't create a
regular spreadsheet from scratch. Advice Please!!!

Excel is a component of Office XP, not Windows XP. You can purchase
Office XP and install it and you'll have access to Excel.

You apparently purchased a computer with a pre-loaded operating system and
applications. Windows XP is the operating system ONLY. Office XP is what
includes Excel. Apprently you purchased a pre-loaded version of Microsoft
Works. That does not include Excel. To get Excel you will have to purchase
it separately or purchase Office XP. You need to discuss the matter with
the outfit from which you purchased the computer.

WORKS is an upgrade path to OFFICE, so you should be able to
buy the upgrade and save a buck or two.

*No* version of Windows XP includes Excel, just as no previous
version of Windows has ever included Excel.

Windows is an operating system. Excel is an application program.
The operating system doesn't come with application programs. If
your previous computer running an older
version of Windows came with Excel, it wasn't that it came with
Windows, it was that your vendor chose to bundle it as part of
the package he sold you.

If you want Excel, you can buy it, either alone or as part of
Microsoft Office. Alternatively you can buy another spreadsheet
program such as Quattro Pro, or get StarOffice or OpenOffice.

No, Jim, not anymore it isn't - and - and Bob will doubtless correct me if
I'm wrong - but 97 was the last version for which Works was a valid upgrade
path. This does not mean that you can purchase an Office 97 upgrade on Ebay
and expect it to upgrade your current Works - you cannot use a newer version
as a qualifying product for an older one. The only qualifying products for
Office XP are retail versions of Office 97 and 2000.
