disabling startup programs

How can I stop a program from automatically starting when
powering up my computer? Can I just remove it from the
start/all programs/startup?

You have at least 2 startup folders.
If the desired item is in one of those then yes delete it.

If not there, do Start > Run > msconfig select "startup" tab
and UNcheck item there.
