After upgrading from ME to xp, my xp-compatible HP
Scanjet 3570c won't work. At first, it wouldn't
install. When I clicked "ME" under "compatibility" in
the "properties" screen, it would install, but it won't
work. An HP tech suggested a USB chipset incompatibility
between the two OS versions. Anyone else having
problems? Thanks for any help you can give.

>upgrading from ME to xp
a big mistake as you have just found out as you should never upgrade from
9X/ME to a NT base OS. Backup your stuff and clean install.

XP is unlike ME in that ME produced a common set of problems
that could be discussed among peers while XP produces a
unique set of problems for each user. The reason seems to
be that ME to YOU and YOU to ME were equivalent, and
doubling either had no linear effect since ME to YOU to ME
and YOU to ME to YOU are faster but not shorter than ME to
YOU or YOU to ME. Of course, ME to XP and YOU to XP are not
necessarily the same, and ME to XP to YOU and YOU to XP to
ME are usually slower and longer than ME to XP and YOU to
XP. Thus, each user has a unique experience with XP, and it
becomes almost pointless to attempt peer-to-peer problem
solving in these newsgroups.
