View Full Version : No 'WORD'( or much else)

December 6th 03, 09:43 AM
Hi,
Since installing XP Home I have been doing without MS Word. I can't stand
it! All documents from my employer are in Word. I don't have anything that
can open them. Same for Excel. Actually, the entire Office 2000 Suite is
missing. I had it while running Win98SE. Did a backup onto CR-R using
Roxio's Direct Disc. Now, XP won't read those discs. My entire old machine
was on those discs!!! Now what do to get everything back? No. I don't have
the Office 200 discs. If only!
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

NO version of ANY Windows operating system has ever included Word.

If you had Office on your old PC, you must have installed it from
somewhere... or if it came preinstalled, you paid for it when you purchased
the PC. Even if you backed up your old PC, you cannot use them to install a
program. Only to copy the files (documents, spreadsheets etc) back to your
new PC.

If you want Word (or other Office programs) you must go out and purchase
them.

Facsists gor their start in france in the 1890s (by a jew no less - the =
dreyfus affair). Italians came up with the name and theory in the 20s =
(and are the only real fascists). Mussulini was the prime theorist and =
he did not think very much of the Nazis and I have a feeling he =
expressed a wish they would stop being facsists.

And today facsism is strongest in america where it has hijacked the =
government through a coup de etat and uses all the tools of oppression =
to cement their hold on power (though some states are fighting back such =
as alaska and haiwai)..

I will take your advice, Mr. Brannigan. I reconsidered my use of "Nazi

I certainly had no intention of starting a flame war when I made my last
post.
I should also point out that most of you have taken my (obviously not too
clear) post incorrectly.
I had the programs on my hard disc before I formatted the HD and installed
XP for the first time.
The problem is, XP won't recognize the discs that contain my backed-up
programs. I burned the B/U discs using Roxio's Direct Disc. I gather it's a
format that XP and other software doesn't recognize due to it's file system.
That's another thing. The discs would have been burned using Fat 32 and XP
doesn't use Fat 32. I'm still searching for help.

Terry;
The file system used by the computer is not relevant to the CDs you
burned.
Also Windows XP works very well in FAT 32 or NTFS.
Try using the same application that created them to read them.

Terry,

No, when you install a program, it "drops" tons of .dlls and other system
files in your Windows folders. Also it installs tons of program pointers in
the system Registry when it installs a program. Thus, it is not as simple as
moving the Program Files folder to a new OS/HDD and hoping that the program
will work again.

In all cases of Windows programs that are properly designed, you must
re-install from the original program file or media in order for the programs
to work.

That's why everyone is telling you that you need to go out and purchase
Office. I hope this clarifies the situation for you.

Terry.
If you mean Direct CD, the problem is that your new computer does not have
the software needed to readed the Direct CD format.

As I still have access to my old computer, I solved the unable to read
problem by inserting the CD in my old computer. After I open the CD, I
closed the CD using the Direct CD option to convert to ISO so that the CD
could be read on any computer.

If you do not have access to your old computer {or another using Direct CD},
I suspect that your only option is to a Windows XP version of the software
that includes Direct CD. Sorry, do not know if one is available.

Must I buy another version even if I have the Product Code for the Windows
2000 I was using before XP was installed? Can't it be downloaded from MS
somewhere?

Thank you for understanding what I was getting at.
I tried downloading a version of Roxio that was compatible with Xp but for
some reason it did not include Direct CD as part of the package. I gather
Roxio has been having trouble with a couple of their software items from all
their Platinum Version 5 suite. Version 6 is smaller by a couple of
applications from what I hear.

In addition to all this, I can't get XP to recognize my scanner. I've been
told on this NG that at 6 years old, my scanner is simply too old and that I
must buy a new one. Boy, when you spend good money on XP you really have to
have lots more cash in reserve to replace all the software and hardware that
doen't work with XP!

How come you don't have the disks for Office. If you have the product =
key (not code) then you can install from any disk the same. If your key =
comes from Off 2000 Upgrade it will work with any upgrade disk.

See if your scanner has windows 2000 drivers available. Sometimes NT4 or =
ME drivers will work in XP.

Terry,

I'm not sure what you are referring to, so I'll try answering both possible
cases:
- Windows 2000 Pro/Server is an Operating System and does NOT include any
"programs" such as Word. Thus, having the Product Key for this won't help
solve your problem.
- If you meant Office 2000 or Word 2000, that's another story and if you
have the Product Key and had registered it with MS previously (and it is NOT
an OEM version that would have to be supported by whoever sold it to you . .
.. the OEM mfr of the PC typically), you can call MS Customer Support
(800-426-9400) to get a replacement CD. If it was an OEM version of Office,
then you must contact the OEM Dealer who sold it to you for support. [All
OEM versions of SW come with NO support from MS, but the dealer is supposed
to support the product for the end-user, that's part of the Licensing deal
and why the OEM products are significantly cheaper than Retail.]

MS does NOT release any Operating Systems or Applications via a Web
Download. The files would be huge (typically >500MB) and controlling piracy
could become a nightmare. Large applications/operating systems aren't
typically Web downloadable from other mfrs either (to the best of my
knowledge . . . and I'm not saying that this is so in "all cases" <g>). If
someone loses/damages a CD, MS typically will ship them a replacement
(assuming that they can prove legal ownership in some way) for a nominal
shipping/handling charge.

Terry,

That's why many of us advise folks to always use the MS Compatibility
utility to check FIRST to see if their system is compatible with a new OS.
So at least they know what needs to be upgraded and can make an informed
decision regarding upgrading the OS or not.

Mfrs of HW/SW are de-motivated from releasing new drivers to support a newer
OS than they originally supported. It takes time and money to create new
drivers (this is NOT a MS responsibility, but "owned" by the HW/SW mfr),
they don't usually charge you for the upgraded drivers (Roxio has been an
exception in some cases), and the cost of HW/SW has fallen to the point that
they don't make the kind of profit margins that they once did (when I worked
at the late DEC in the 1980s the selling price was calculated to be ~3x the
actual cost of mfr, today margins are very thin). Thus, the solution chosen
by many HW/SW mfrs are to force you to buy a new piece of HW/SW and perhaps
you get a small discount for the "upgrade" (and perhaps not).

I'm not defending any of this, just reporting it so that you understand
what's going on in the HW/SW industry.
