On my XP Pro notebook, I'm having a devil of a time with 802.11b and
encryption. WEP insists on enabling itself, no matter how many times I
*un*check "Data Encryption (WEP) enabled". WEP is not enabled on my
router.

I get plenty of signal, but nearly nonexistant throughput. Every once
in a while it seems WEP releases its grip and it's like the floodgates
open... suddenly 10kbps becomes 200-700kbps or better. But I cannot
get the WEP to stay *off*.

Any ideas? TIA

Remove all the listed access points, and start over.
Also under the advanced setting on the config of your access point see what
defauts are set.
And un-check "let Windows manage the wireless access.

Oh and be sure your access point is not set to transmitt WEP.
