There are dozens of steps to take to improve XP HE speed.
XP has tons of eye candy. Things like cursor shadows and
so on. You can turn all this off in the control
panel\system\advanced tab\click the settings button under
performance and set to best performance. Whatever you do
never store programs or applications or files on the
desktop, only shortcuts. Turn off the indexing service.
Get a good free spyware removal tool like Spybot Search
and Destroy. Get a good registry cleaner like JV16 Power
Tools. Also free. There are all sorts of tweaks you can do
that will help. XTEQ Systems X-Setup is free and the most
powerful registry tweaking tool on the market today. You
can tweak 1200 settings to improve overall
performance. There are many registry tweaks to decrease the
time it takes to display menus and so on. In my opinion
the minimum memory requirements to insure that you can run
all todays applications as well as video intensive games
are a 64MB Video card,512MB of RAM and a Pagefile(virtual
memory) setting of 50 to start and max 1500MB. This will
get you started. If you need the registry routes to help
improve XP some more, like enabling second level cash,
locking I\O pagelock limits, designating high priority to
your CMOS which gives an overall system performance boost,
just e:mail me as there are too many for only one post.
Good luck.
