View Full Version : Shortcut to Home Drive no longer works after installing .NET 1.1

Hi,

We have a number of computers connected to a network with
5 Windows 2000 servers (SP4). Each user who logs in gets
their home drive (H:) mapped to their user directory on
whatever machine it sits on. We place a shortcut on the
desktop that points to H: (it has been suitably massaged
by shortcut.exe).

This shortcut has worked for a number of years. It works
on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and
Windows XP machines. However, I recently installed
the .NET framework 1.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003 on one
of the Windows XP machines and the shortcut STOPPED
working (it says it cannot find H:\ and goes off searching
for it, trying to remap to the first directory it finds on
H:\). I do not know if .NET 1.1 is the culprit or not, it
is just that it worked before I installed it (along with
IIS and MSDE SP3) adn it stopped working afterwards.

Note that I have a Windows 2000 machine with .NET 1.0 and
Visual Studio .NET 2002 on it and the shortcut works just
fine on this machine (however, it has neither IIS nor MSDE
on it).

I removed IIS from the machine is question to no avail. I
am about to remove MSDE and then .NET to see what happens,
but I suspect something has changed on this system that
will not be corrected by deinstalling anything.

Has anyone else seen this or know how to fix it? I need
the shortcut to work and I need .NET on this set of
computers.

Thanks,

Karim
