John, I had the same proplem i spoke with the broadband
engineer and he told me it cannot be used when your
connected to the broadband you have to disconnect it.
This i have done connecting the computers internal modem
directly to my phone line- Hey Presto it worked. However
i find this really annoying having to disconnect/
reconnect to receive a fax, surely there must be a better
way or some software to help

Are you using an Adsl line? If you are then you can use your fax program
thru your modem while still connected to the broadband. I do this all the
time both for send and receive.
