View Full Version : Logon Screen and Screen Saver

I have two Windows XP Pro PC's...both PC's are custom built and have similar
hardware. I have been using XP for some time now. I recently upgraded PC#2
(almost a brand new PC now) and did a fresh install. About 4 or 5 months
later, I have noticed the following odd behaviour from PC #2. Both PC's are
set to display screensaver after, say, 10 or 15 minutes...and monitor power
off after 30. On PC#1 it works fine...but on PC#2 (the most recent one with
a newer, fresher install) the screensaver comes on, then the monitor powers
down as it is supposed to...but after anywhere from 30minutes to 1hr or so,
it makes the windows noise as if someone moved the mouse and the logon (user
select) screen becomes visible. Once this happens, it seems to stay on
there forever without any screensaver at all until someone logs back in or
restarts. It does not seem to matter whether or not anyone is currently
logged on or if the PC has just been rebooted. I have downloaded and used
several spyware programs to make sure there was nothing there that shouldn't
be doing something I didn't want it to...as I suspected, all was clean. (I
try to keep installed programs to a minimum and monitor everything that
happens on both PC's). I do have Norton Antivirus with all the latest virus
defs, and full system scan reveals nothing. It seems that it happened a
while back, perhaps after a Windows update that was performed...but I cannot
tell for sure, as both PC's are kept up to date on those and have the most
recent ones... only PC#2 does this. I have disabled and then re-enabled
the screensaver and power management options, changed the time limit on the
screensaver around to see if that makes a difference...nothing seems to
matter. Neither PC is set to hibernate - I hate hibernate hehehe... this
particular one with the problem is an Athlon 1.4 CPU with 384mb of PC133
memory and a 20gb WD hard drive.

I have even checked power management settings in BIOS to make sure
everything was set how it should be...and everything seems ok there too -
nothing I can see that would do anything strange with power management...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...this is getting to be aggravating
since I cannot find a solution... and its not really a "problem" persay,
more of an annoyance...but I still wonder how well the monitor likes being
on without a screensaver, all night or day long...

Thanks!
