View Full Version : Windows XP wireless problems.

I am wondering if anyone else (other than me) has had a
problem with wireless networking in Windows XP.

The problem I'm having is my wireless connection will
connect and disconnect randomly for no apparent reason.

Here's the scenario...

I have a Compaq Laptop and a DLink DWL-650 802.11b
(PCMCIA) wireless card. In Windows XP, I have always had
the same problem, random disconnects for no apparent
reason.

(For testing purposes) I installed Windows 2000 on this
very same laptop. My wireless connection works perfectly
under Windows 2000.

The reason I believe it works perfectly under Windows
2000 is because Windows 2000 does not have native support
for wireless networking and it is "forced" to use the
vendor's (DLink) wireless connection utility.

But Windows XP does have support for wireless networking
and (probably) for that reason when I install my 802.1b's
drivers, it does not (or will not) install the DLink
wireless connection utility (only the actual drivers) and
I am "forced" to use Windows XP's wireless connection
utility. (If I uncheck "Allow Windows to manage my
wireless connections" nothing happens.)

Further proof that convinces me that Windows XP's
wireless connection support is broken is, a friend of
mine has a desktop computer that has a PCI wireless card.
When I let Windows manage her wireless connection, she
too would always get random disconnects. But when I
disabled Windows management of the wireless connection
and started using the vendors wireless connection
utility, her random disconnects went away.

The problem with my DLink card is when I install the
driver/utility in Windows XP, only the drivers get
installed, not the utility (probably because it sees
Windows XP and thinks it doesn't need the utility). But
when I install the same drivers/utility in Windows 2000,
both the drivers and utility are installed and I don't
have a single problem with my wireless connection.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. I
don't want to continue using Windows 2000 on my laptop
because for one, it originally came with Windows XP
installed and is not meant for Windows 2000 and two, my
copy of Windows 2000 isn't (technically) licensed to my
laptop (I just installed it for testing purposes).

PS
Also, I downloaded and installed the 180 day version of
Windows Server 2003 (I know it's meant for servers, but
again, just for testing purposes) and it has that exact
same problems with wireless that Windows XP has. What
gives?

My exact hardware is.
