View Full Version : upgrading from NT on laptop

Hi all,

I have NT 4 on my IBM thinkpad laptop, and I want to move to XP Pro. I have
a couple questions:

1. Should I get the full version or is the upgrade good enough? What happens
if my system crushes, and I need to do a fresh install. Would I then have to
reinstall NT, and then the XP upgrade on top of it?

2. I understand that XP takes a "mental" picture of my hardware while
installing. It will then register my CD drive. What will happen when I swap
the CD with the floppy? Would it realize I'm still on the same machine?

3. Any thoughts in general on moving to XP vs. 2000? The latter is certainly
cheaper...

Thanks,
Eyal

Eyal;
1. The full version is not necessary as long as you have the NT4 CD
as a qualifier.
You can perform an upgrade or a Clean Installation with the upgrade
version so it is not necessary to install NT4 before Windows XP.
2. A floppy and CD swap will not be an issue.
This link has a good explanation:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm
3. Just be sure the computer is ready for Windows XP:

Y'know, I've said it in private, but I haven't yet said it in public:
Jupiter, congratulations on receiving the MVP award! It is richly deserved.

And I will increase the thanks vote again. Hope JJ doesn't ever leave the

Thank you all for the vote of confidence.
It always concerns me a little when I return and see post not from the
OP.
I think "Did I miss something?"
Fortunately, this time that is not the case.

Not being an MVP I don't know what the award is all about, but let me join
in on the applause for Jupiter. Also, a cheer for all the other MVP's.

You don't have to be an MVP to know about the award. Here's the page:

Thanks, Jim. I didn't realize there were so many people involved.
