View Full Version : CMD.EXE -- Where can I find a list of commands it supports?

I've noticed that some DOS commands (e.g., 'deltree'
and 'attrib') aren't supported by CMD.EXE (Windows XP Pro
5.1).

Where can I find a full list of the commands that CMD.EXE
supports?

Thanks.

There are commands used by the Command Prompt MS-DOS emulator,
but there are no DOS commands because Windows XP is not based on DOS.

Type Help at a command prompt. Type Help followed by a command for
specific information about that command.

You and Mike must have gotten short-changed because my Win
XP supports ATTRIB.
BTW, emulated does not mean emasculated. Just like commands
in real DOS, emulated commands produce real results and must
be used with caution.

Although DELTREE was included in DOS 5.0, which is the
nominal specification for the DOS emulator in Win XP, this
command was omitted from the emulated command set.

Since I posted my original message, I've noticed that for
some strange reason 'attrib' sometimes works and sometimes
doesn't - in the latter case, I get the following error
message returned:

'attrib' is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program or batch file

Has anyone else experienced this? (It's not related
to 'path' status - I've checked that.)

---> Re: 'deltree,' is there any equivalent in cmd.exe -
i.e., a command (or combination of commands) to
recursively delete directories and their files?

Thanks again.
