I have a Supermicro P6DGU board and run Windows XP Professional. My cd-rom
is a
Panasonic LF-D521E DVD. Im having trouble setting the BIOS so that I can
boot the machine from cd. Any idea how I should go about it?
Thanks,
Johannes,

In your motherboard manual, the boot device order is set under
Advanced Setup in the BIOS. The CD-ROM drive must be before the
hard drive in boot order. You can leave the floppy drive where it
is since it will not boot if there is no disk present. Your boot
screen might require you to hit a key to confirm booting from the
CD-ROM drive. If so, the boot will go to the next device if you do
not hit the key. Under those conditions, you could leave the boot
device order that way and not hit the key so the computer boots from
the hard drive.
As far as how to change the order, some BIOSs use the arrow keys or
+/- keys to move the devices up or down in the list. Other BIOSs
allow you to change the selections at each position with various
keys. There should be a note on that screen telling you how to do
it.

If it's for the purpose of installing XP and you can't get the CD to boot,
you can get a set of boot/setup floppies here>

Check your computer/motherboard manual on how to enter your BIOS. Different
methods are used, so we can't guess what yours is. When you get into BIOS,
on one of the screens, you will see an item that says "First Boot Device",
or something similar. This needs to be set to CD ROM. You then save the BIOS
settings, exit the BIOS setup, and reboot with the XP CD in your CD drive.
