View Full Version : Speed of XP search

Here's a little more data on our problem.
We are searching a 16GB, NT 4.0 drive.
When we search for any filename that contain the string 252* from an NT 4.0
machine, it is able to complete this search in approximately 15 seconds.
When performing this search on a Windows 2000 machine, the search takes
three minutes. The same search on XP takes nearly six minutes. All network
connections are identical, so it is the OS that is causing this slowdown.
I installed AgentRansack as suggested and it brings my search time on XP
down to three minutes, but this is still way too slow when compared to the
15 seconds required on NT 4.0. Could this have something to do with the fact
that the search function in XP is designed with Active Directory in mind? I
cannot understand why this new OS would be 24x slower than NT 4.0 with
regards to searching.
Any other ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

are the settings on all search utilities the same (e.g. search for hidden
files/folders, system files, etc.)? what os is the machine on which the data
resides running?

Dan,
The search settings should be all the same. We are not searching hidden
folders or system folders. We are simply searching a directory on our NT 4.0
server that contains approximately 16GB of files in various directories.
I've searched for info on the internet on this issue and have found nothing.
I can't believe that we are the only ones facing this problem. Maybe no one
else uses the search function as frequently as we do, I'm not sure.
Searching is such an important task, and I can't believe this type of
performance is acceptable by Microsoft's standards.

3x60 = 180sec vs 15sec
Sure the network is running at 10M instead of 100M?

XP searching is 24x slower than NT searching. Win2000 searching is 12x
slower than NT searching.
The network speed is 10M across the board, the network has not changed.
