logging off

i'm having problems logging off my windows xp home edition
installed in my dell inspiron 8200 laptop. when i click on
the turn off computer button it shows it is logging off
and then shutting down but it just freezes from there and
does nothing.
what could i do to resolve this problem. I always end up
removing the batteries to shut the computer down.
