Windows XP Home Edition won't Update....
I go to the control panel and click on updates an it checks my computer and
finds that I need 10 or 12 updates... I download them and then TRY and
install them and I get errors. And none of them will install. I try doing
just one and the same things happens.....

Post back with the information from step 10 if all else fails.
1. Check Date/Time
2. Disable firewall
3. (Windows XP):
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Don't forget steps 6-9 catroot2 file.
Do this whether SP1 is the issue or not.
4. (Windows XP)
Go to Control Panel.
Click Windows Update on the left panel
5. Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History
6. If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update
7. Set a language in Internet Explorer:
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
(1.) Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
(2.) Click "Languages".
(3.) Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language
Options" dialog box.
8. Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use
automatic configuration script."
To do this:
(1.) Open Internet Explorer.
(2.) Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
(3.) Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
(4.) Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and
"Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.
9. Upgrade to Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 if not already
installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
10. Check the Windows Update Log in the "C:\Windows\Windows
Update.log" for the exact error message.
See if something here fits

From what you described you have a corrupt 'catroot2' file. Go to
C:/windows/system32 and find file named 'catroot2'. Rename the file to
something like catold2. Then reboot, download and install. A new catroot2
file will be generated. Update 817287 will fix the problem causing the
corrupt catroot2 file.

Well I guess I jumped the gun as the process worked as far as I went. It
showed all the updates and let me download them. BUT when I logged back
onto the internet it wouldn't load my browser or MNS or Yahoo. I'm glad I
had RESTORE. My only other thought would be to do what you said and then
when I ran into this problem to uninstall my modem and let it install
again.......what do you think

I tried this and the start button is grayed out and won't let me select. I
have shut down the firewall and virus scan also. So non of this works and
I'm back to where I was with Restore.

It sounds like that one of the updates after the catroot repair is messing
with your IE installation. The catroot dir only keeps an index of the
updates on your box and doesn't touch your IE.
How many updates did your download and install at one time after the catroot
change?
Do it again but after only try SP1 first by itself and see if you have the
same problem.

Well here is what I found out........I had about 13 critical updates and
they all went through one by one and then I created a Restore Point the I
started on Win XP and here is what was listed to download
811493
818043
815485
Dir x9.0
Microsoft Net Framework
Q322011
327979
810243
Rec update dx 9.0 2.3 Mb
Windows Messenger
Microsoft win Jour
win movie maker
DRIVERS
Microsoft Modem Driver 4/18/03
Intel Net Driver 11/06/01
None of the above have been downloaded yet
811493/818043/815485 each done separately causes a problem. I can start the
modem and have it connect but the IE Browser will start and then try and
load but just tries for about 5 seconds and then tries over...

I didn't and skipped over it then got an error on the next 818043 and then
skipped that one and Restored etc and then did 815485 and that gave me the
same problem. I knew from another article that Microsoft knows about the
problem with 811493

Well I want to thank you very much for all your help. There were errors on
a few installs but found that they were already installed of course and I
uninstalled them and then downloaded them again to get rid of them so Root
could have a record of them. I made at least 10 restore points during the
30 downloads and that worked out great. I only have the one file 811483
that I didn't download and wonder why if there is a problem with it that
Microsoft would leave it out there to cause trouble. Well again this solved
my problem completely and I thank you very much. Oh I had a item out there
on trouble on Activesynce not installing. In fact none of the versions
would install. I tried after all of this and now have ver 3.7
running.......*S* smile Thanks again

811493 only causes problems (and many of them) if you run virus detect
programs such as McAfee or Norton and others. It is useful and beneficial
for those that do not use Norton, McAfee etc.

Microsoft will not pull 811493 because it is an important security
update, just not many need the update.
Microsoft can not pull a fix to a known issue without a replacement.
Many people myself included have no issues with the patch.
There are some who have determined 811493 is still necessary in spite
of the drawbacks.
It is unclear exactly what the exact cause is.
AV autoprotect seems to be a major factor, however not everyone has
the issue which makes it more difficult to diagnose.
Computers with all types of AV seem to get the issue.
Computers with all types of AV seem to be immune.
