View Full Version : Search not finding text within file

I am searching a folder containing lots of files of type, .rep and .dat for
a particular word. Although I know that several files contain that word, the
search does not find any files.

Anyone else come across this or know how to get it to work.

NB this is on WinXP Home edition with all patches installed.

Stephen,

Troubleshooting Searching for Text (Word or Phrase)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm#searchtext

I find the built-in search feature a little weak and have used AgentRanSack
for this function. You can download it, it's a free utility, from the
following site;
http://www.agentransack.com/default.aspx
(scroll to the bottom of the page for the free version, which is all you'll
need)

Thanks for your help with this.

Microsoft gets my "Muppet of the Week" award for a search all files facility
that doesn't search all files.

The person who designed your file format didn't supply a filter.

And most likely he/she designed it long before filters in WinXP (as well as WinXP itself) was invented ;-)
