Hello everyone,

I have a Windows XP Home Edition upgrade cd that appears to
install all the files, then quits shortly after it begins
"Checking Devices...".

More specifically, it goes completely black. No error
messages or anything. I've tried waiting it out, but
usually give up after a couple of hours.

I am pretty sure it's not my hardware, which leads me to
believe the cd has something corrupted somewhere. I figure
that by skipping past the devices check I'll be all right.

Does anybody know how to do that, if it is even possible?

Have you checked for compatibility?
Insert the CD, choose the option for compatibility.
Uninstall, not just disable, anything that shows issues with Windows
XP whether it is compatible with Windows XP or not.

Otherwise, do you have an ATI video card?
Try swapping to another card until the upgrade is complete.
Some people report issues with ATI cards during installation of
Windows XP.

You have a hardware issue so remove all of the adapter cards and/or disable
all onboard sound, LAN or USB in the bios. Set the bios to the default
settings and disable "plug and play OS"

When windows is in and running place one card at a time into the box and
enable onboard hardware.

Just remember that sound and video slots share the same resources so switch
to a different PCI slot if you still have trouble.

XP is know to have trouble with NVIDIA cards and bad memory.
